PLWM Open Doors Weekend at Furnace and Ystrad Einion

Wednesday, 9 September, 2009

An Open Doors European Heritage Weekend is taking place in Ceredigion, on the 12th and 13th September 09 which will mean that members of the public can come along for free talks and guided tours at Cadw’ scheduled monument at Dyfi Furnace, a charcoal blast furnace dating from 1755 (North of Aberystwyth) and the nearby former lead mine Ystrad Einion, both hidden industrial gems in Northern Ceredigion. PLWM are working with CADW to put on this event, which will take place from 10am and finish at 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

For those wishing to come you need to book at place. Open Doors (European) Heritage Days offer free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or which normally charge for admission. An Open Doors event can be a context in which to offer a fresh look at the apparently familiar; to put on show the work of specialists involved in conservation or interpretation; to let the public “behind the scenes” in a museum or gallery; or to offer a rare opportunity to view a private property.

Free guided tours will be on offer at Dyfi Furnace itself and also organised bus trips from the Furnace to the nearby Ystrad Einion mine with an expert guided tour will take place over the two days. Robert Ireland from the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust will deliver the mine tour, Huw Davies, a Blue Badge Guide will be delivering the Dyfi Furnace talks. A small minibus will make several trips throughout the day if needed. People wishing to book a place on a minibus will need to ring the PLWM project officer Natalie Moyce on 01545 574160.

It would be useful to let us know if you will be attending the Furnace tours too. Once the visitors are all up at the mine the guided tour will ensue for an hour and a half. Visitors to the mine on the weekend are advised to wear sensible shoes, as there will be a certain amount of walking uphill on grass and stony ground, although all the really difficult bits are covered by modern staircases.

This is a visit to the surface remains of Ystrad Einion mine, and visitors will not be going underground. The event is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government through Cadw, and organised by the Civic Trust for Wales, which works with its partners to promote European Heritage Days in the British Isles. PLWM are organising the event locally with the assistance of the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust. PLWM is funded under the European Rural Development Plan and is set to improve Heritage Tourism in the Uplands of Ceredigion until Feb 2011.
